Snowflakes

Formation

Snowflakes nucleate around mineral or organic particles in moisture-saturated, subfreezing air masses. They grow by net accretion to the incipient crystals in hexagonal formations. The cohesive forces are primarily electrostatic.

Color

Although ice by itself is clear, snow usually appears white in color due to diffuse reflection of the whole spectrum of light by the scattering of light by the small crystal facets of the snowflakes of which it is comprised.

Nucleus

In warmer clouds, an aerosol particle or "ice nucleus" must be present in (or in contact with) the droplet to act as a nucleus. The particles that make ice nuclei are very rare compared to nuclei upon which liquid cloud droplets form; however, it is not understood what makes them efficient. Clays, desert dust, and biological particles may be effective, although to what extent is unclear

Top ten cool fact about snowflakes

A snowflakes is one of Allah’s (SWT) most fragile creations. Here are some amazing facts about snowflakes to marvel this winter.

1.       1... Snowflakes are hexagonal in shape which means each snowflake has six sides. This is due to the unique bonding of hydrogen and oxygen molecules. However, you might see some that have three or twelve sides

2.      2.  Amazingly, no two snowflakes are alike. So, when you see snow next time, observe how different they are in shape, size or color.

3.      3. Nearly 35 different shapes of snowflakes fall on the ground. As they fall, their shape changes due to the temperature of the area and the height at which the snowflake forms.

4.       4.The average snowflakes fall at a speed of 3.1 miles per hour.

5.  The largest snowflake that has ever fallen was measured up to 15 inches wide and eight inches thick in 1887.

6.      6. One cubic foot of snow can contain one billion snowflake crystals.

7.       7.An average snowflake is made up of 180 billion molecules of water. Now that is mind-blowing!

8.        8.Snowflakes may not appear white necessarily. In large clusters, they appear blue in color.

9.         9 Snowflakes are not frozen raindrops. They are    formed when water vapor freezes in the air due to cold weather.

10.  10. In the south pole, the air is so dry that snow crystals form slowly and tend to be more perfectly shaped than those found in many other places.
